Warning "GoTryThis" on Windows

If you haven't heard about GoTryThis yet, you probably aren't interested in making money on the Internet, or you haven't put yourself on someone's mailing list yet.

If you are thinking about getting this software and your domain is hosted on a Windows computer, you can forget about the whole idea right now.

GoTryThis is a great concept. However, the developer(s) did not test this on a standard Windows shared hosting environment so some of the "tricks" they are pulling to make it work will not work in a secure shared windows hosting environment.

If this changes, I'll let you know right here.

Maintenance at DMB Hosting

On Friday, 8/4/06 we will be performing maintenance on our Control Panel database. The maintenance will require taking the Control Panel offline while we compact its database. This maintenance is required in order to keep the control panel running at top speed.

The service window will begin at 10PM EST and will last 3 hours.

This maintenance will not affect your domains. All web, mail, and database servers will remain active during the service window.

Creating a small Virtual Machine

A couple of days ago, I posted that Virtual PC is now free.

Free Virtual PC

According to several news services and Microsoft itself, Virtual PC is now available as a Free download.

As a web developer, why do you care? Well here area couple things you can do with Virtual PC that will help your web development efforts.

• Install multiple copies of Windows so that you can install different versions of browsers, most notibly Internet Explorer. If you want to be sure your web site runs on IE 4, 5, 6 and soon 7. The only way you can do this is with multiple installations.
• Want to test a demo of some software? Well if you test it on your main computer, it could cause all kinds of trouble. At the very least it will add entries to your registry that will ultimately slow your computer down. Instead, install that demo into a Virtual PC before you decide to make it a permenant part of your toolkit.

Note, this is testing aptitude. It may be possible to teach the concepts that this test uses, but that's not the point. What the test is trying to determine is, are you someone who will thrive as a programmer or are you better off looking for some other employement?

I've always known programming is something you either have a natural ability for or not. I've hired programmers strictly based on my belief that they could or couldn't program (when looking for low cost labor.) The harder test is, now that you've recieved a degree, how well can you program in the real world? As an employer, that's the test I'd want to see.

In my nearly 20 years as a programmer, I've also found some interesting correlations. And while I wouldn't make the correlations part of any of my interviews, I do find the correlations interesting.

What makes DMB Hosting unique?

I've been thinking about this for several months. Of course, I know the answer, but how to verbalize it, there's the question.

What makes us unique is the fact that we are not just a hosting business. Oh, sure that's primarily what we supply. But, there are so many hosting companies out there that if that's ALL we did, we might as well close up. But, the fact that there are so many hosting companies out there is just the reason we started DMB Hosting. You see, all of those other hosting companies are JUST supplying hosting. In fact, the reason we started DMB Hosting is because we wanted a hosting company that understood not only how the wires got plugged together and how the web software got installed, but also understood how to write code and the issues involved in writing the code.

Help me out here...

I never could quite figure out why anyone who had another Internet connection would keep their AOL service unless they just didn't know anybetter.

Seems now AOL can't find a good reason either.

Time Warner Inc.'s AOL unit is considering offering its services, except for Internet access, free of charge to anyone with a high-speed connection, a source familiar with the plans said on Thursday.

Form follows function. Even on the web.

Over at About.com, they make the point, based on recent research, that a good looking web site isn't always the best web site.

Of course, if anyone has paid any attention to Google, or Amazon, they would already know this. Neither of these sites are particularly flashy, yet both do what they do argueably better than any of the other sites they are competing with.

The point? If you are thinking about putting up a web site, concentrate on your content first, your navigation structure second. Once you've figure out those two items, you can concentrate on how the site looks.
